is urging doctors to offer more women the chance at VBAC. According to
the NIH, the whole idea of “once a cesarean, always a cesarean” should
get tossed out the window, though of course doctors need to make
decisions on a case-by-case basis. Here’s a highlight from an
Associated Press story that ran yesterday:

“Too
many pregnant women who want to avoid a repeat cesarean delivery are
being denied the chance, concludes a government panel…” and “The NIH
panel urged that doctors offer mothers-to-be an unbiased look at the
pros and cons, so they can decide for themselves.” Read the full story here.

Many factors go into a successful VBAC. But here’s some great news, according to the NIH:
“Rigorous research shows that a trial of labor is successful in nearly
75 percent of cases, and maternal mortality is actually lower for women
who have a trial of labor, regardless of whether they end up delivering
vaginally or by cesarean.”
