Lactation Support
Health Foundations understands the importance of ongoing support to help establish and successfully continue breast feeding. As part of your care, a midwife is available to offer that support and answer questions. Mothers are encouraged to participate in a breastfeeding class offered at the Birth Center. This class focuses on getting off to a great start with comfortable latch, understanding nursing positions and infant feeding cues. The class also covers nutrition for breast feeding, breast feeding supplies, and common concerns such as infant growth spurts. We also encourage pregnant mothers to contact their local La Leche League group and attend a meeting prenatally.
Lactation Consultations
Private lactation consultations are available in your home or at the birth center.
Chris Clark, RCP, IBCLC
Chris has been assisting mothers with breastfeeding for over 20 years – the last ten working as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) and doula. She became involved in the medical field 32 years ago as a respiratory therapist. Her experiences have ranged from working in large metropolitan high-risk birth centers, rural hospitals, busy clinics, and a non-profit organization she started in 2000. Chris has been a speaker on lactation, childbirth, and kangaroo care at state, national, and international conferences. She developed and taught an 8-hour breastfeeding course for health care practitioners, a 5-hour course for certifying doulas, and has provided instruction to hundreds of couples through her Trusting Birth classes. To help foster positive breastfeeding outcomes Chris received training to implement Kangaroo Mother Care and Baby Friendly Practices in hospital and clinic settings. She began a “Skin-to-Skin” initiative at United Children's Hospital, providing physicians with the single most effective practice to increase breastfeeding success.
Chris has been passionate about helping women through the life transforming experiences of birthing and breastfeeding since her own journey into motherhood over 30 years ago. Her path was peppered with wonderful women mentors who seemed to be there at just the right times, inspiring her personal mission to create a community of mother-to-mother mentors. Chris believes the art of breastfeeding goes beyond technique, and has enhanced her medical practice with Reiki training and establishing a system of emotional support.
Chris helps facilitate breastfeeding support classes and provides at home consultations for Health Foundations.
