Prenatal Care
We view pregnancy and childbirth as a normal, healthy processes. Our goal is to empower you by helping you master the challenges of pregnancy and birth. In our model of care, the childbearing woman has the central role, and we provide the supervision and care.
Each prenatal appointment is scheduled for an hour. Your first prenatal visit includes a physical assessment, lab tests, information regarding preparing for the birth, dietary review and nutrition consultation. At this visit each family receives their pregnancy manual full of important information for you throughout your pregnancy. Subsequent prenatal visits are scheduled once per month until 28th weeks, every 2 weeks until 36th weeks, and every week you deliver or as often as necessary. If you are choosing a home birth, at about 36 weeks a visit will be made at your home.
The prenatal visit is a time for learning, exploring issues, preparing for parenting, and dealing with the social stresses of life as they relate to the pregnancy. Our goal is to promote family bonding while maintaining safety for the mother and baby, making this a growing experience for the birthing woman and family.
You will be encouraged to bring your partner or other family members to ask any questions and to use this time to get to know your midwife and for her to learn about you. Partner and family involvement is valued highly in midwifery care.
During your visits we monitor the physical development and health of both you and your baby. We spend time educating you about how to maintain a healthy pregnancy and lifestyle. We answer your questions about prenatal nutrition and exercise, your baby's development, and your changing body, and we will begin the process of preparing you for the transition to parenthood and the new addition to your family.
In addition to the regularly scheduled visits we require you attend one class at the birth center. This class is taken during your third trimester and focuses on the transition of becoming parents and covers newborn care.
We work hard to provide a safe, sensitive environment where you are truly heard. We spend time learning about your desires, challenges, concerns, and joys. We answer your questions about safety, choices for prenatal testing, and the process of labor and birth with the latest information available.
The midwives are trained to help prevent complications and to assess the need for transfer of care in the event that medical assistance becomes necessary, and are certified in Healthcare Provider CPR as well as Neonatal Resuscitation.
If you are currently with another provider for your prenatal care but are considering transfering to Health Foundations, please decide before 32 weeks. You need time to meet our midwives and gain their trust in our model of care. We need time to bond with you as well. Please know our facility does have a limited capacity and our schedule can fill up quickly.
